Hotham memorials

Prominently displayed on the walls of South Dalton St. Mary's Church are memorials dedicated to the Hotham family. Among them, taking pride of place in the center, is the tomb of Sir John Hotham, who passed away in 1689. Originally located in the old church, the tomb was transferred to its current position. The monument features a reclining effigy of Sir John Hotham, symbolizing his eternal rest, while below lies a skeleton, serving as a poignant reminder of human mortality. Positioned at the corners of the tomb are statues representing the cardinal virtues: Truth holding a mirror, Fortitude with a broken column, Temperance carrying a water pitcher, and Justice brandishing a sword.
